Short history

The gender perspective Biciescuela is a project that originated in 2018 with Mujeres en Bici León, a feminist cycling collective in León, Guanajuato, Mexico. The collective was working on supporting women in cycling through the city despite the symbolic violence (Bourdieu, 1998) associated with moving with fear. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mujeres en Bici León faced difficulties in continuing the Biciescuela for women. Subsequently, a conversation took place with the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development (GIZ) in Mexico, which led to the initiation of support and financing for the implementation of the Biciescuelas con Perspectiva de Género project through the Climate Protection in Urban Policy in Mexico (CiClim) project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). It is important to mention that the General Mobility Directorate of the municipality of León, through the Non-Motorized Mobility Department, played a crucial role in fostering women's cycling mobility by establishing connections between Mujeres en Bici León, the Ciencia Azul Civil Association, and the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development (GIZ) in Mexico. They also provided support in terms of operations, space management, and project communication.
